Re-refined Base Oils

Base oils are traditionally produced from virgin crude oil and used in lubricants like passenger car motor oils. Over time, lubricants degrade and need replacement, but underlying the base oils can be recovered through re-refining as they do not wear out. Re-refining removes spent additives and contaminants, restoring the base oil so it can be used in new lubricant formulations.

  • In the U.S., ~25% of used lubricants are re-refined, while the rest are burned, dumped, or processed into fuels or blend stocks.¹
  • Today, most re-refined base oils are of Group I or II quality.²
  • Two-thirds of major lubricant companies have made public commitments to reduce emissions or reach net zero.3 However, despite growing demand, only ~2% of Group III supply comes from re-refined base oils.²
  • ReGen III is focused on expanding this supply and addressing the market’s demand for high-quality, domestically produced Group III re-refined base oils.

ReGen™ Impact

As blenders and oil marketers actively seek re-refined Group III base oils to reduce their cradle-to-grave carbon footprint and meet their ESG goals, the ReGen™ process offers a sustainable alternative and achieves the following outcomes based on the Company’s proposed Texas City Project:

  • 82% lower CO2e emissions than producing of base oils and combusting UMO, equivalent to CO2e emission reductions of ~900,000 t/year
  • 36% lower CO2e emissions than producing base oils and disposing UMO via storm drain
  • 99.7% lower eco-toxicity than producing base oils and disposing UMO via storm drain
  • Up to 10% decrease in UMO burned or disposed in the U.S.
